Vascepa is derived from omega-3 fish oil and is the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA as a prescription. It contains the ingredient icosapent ethyl, which is a highly purified and stable ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) - which the body can't make for itself but is found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) - which the body can make from ALA but are also present in oily fish and fish oils, including cod liver oil Some brands of milk, yoghurt, The richest sources of very long chain n-3 fatty acids are oily fish and fish oil (see Panel 1).
